Dow Exhibiting at Chinaplas 2008

Offering technical solutions and innovations to the marketplace

The Plastics portfolio of The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”) will be exhibiting at Chinaplas, from April 17 – 20, at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.  Themed ‘Think Solutions, Think Dow”, the Plastics portfolio’s program for Chinaplas 2008 will exemplify Dow as an innovative solution provider and provide a platform for strengthening customer relationships.

Dow’s booth will be located at Hall W2, No. H31.  In line with the theme, ‘Think Solutions, Think Dow”,  the booth will feature market-focused applications in three thematic zones: sustainable food & packaging; health & living; and conservation & transportation.  Each zone will showcase various market-focused solutions offered by the Plastics portfolio, and will also highlight selected Plastics products that demonstrate Dow’s commitment to sustainability.

At Chinaplas 2008, Dow will introduce a new copolymer that is styrene and butadiene based, with the generic name of Styrene Butadiene (SB) Copolymer during the initial launch. This is an alternative to Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) in applications like consumer electronics or home appliance parts with added cost advantage and property benefits like high impact strength and surface gloss.

The Asia-Pacific Product and Market Manager for Polystyrene, Mr. K. Supot said, “SB Copolymer is an exciting resin that is produced through rigorous research and development work, in our continuous effort to offer better solutions to meet market needs. It bridges the gap between regular high-impact polystyrene resins and ABS with a combination of easy processing and property benefits. It provides similar gloss to ABS and offers slightly better toughness than normal polystyrene resins. This new product is also very much in line with our sustainability goal of energy conservation as it consumes less energy during processing, thus offering lower production costs.”

The first series of copolymers to be launched in the marketplace are the X-1 and X-2 SB Copolymers which deliver a balance of outstanding gloss and exceptional toughness. X-1 SB Copolymer is designed for applications that have stringent requirements on gloss and aesthetics, while X-2 SB Copolymer is tailor-made for applications that require high toughness or drop impact performance.
