INFUSE™ Olefin Block Copolymers Ideal for Food Contact Applications
Midland, MI - July 17, 2007 The Dow Chemical Company today confirmed that INFUSE™ Olefin Block Copolymers (OBCs) comply with all requirements for food contact as set forth by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Union (EU). “This compliance confirms that our customers can use INFUSE OBCs to deliver new levels of performance in food contact applications,” said Marco Levi, global business director for plastomers, elastomers and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), The Dow Chemical Company. “In canisters, bottles, adhesives, foams and other food contact applications, INFUSE OBCs will deliver an outstanding balance of flexibility and high temperature resistance, excellent elastic and compression set properties, and lower cost-in-use versus many competitive materials.” FDA Compliance When used unmodified for food contact applications, this resin will comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act as a food contact substance (FCN) as a result of a pre-market notification with an effective date of October 7, 2004 under FCN 424. This notification allows for use of this product as articles or components of articles used in contact with all food types under Conditions of Use A through H, as described in U.S. FDA Table 2 of 21 CFR § 176.170(c). EU Compliance The composition of this product complies with the requirements of EU Directive 2002/72/EC as amended (relating to plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs). About INFUSE OBCs INFUSE OBCs feature unique block architecture that allows for new-to-the-world combinations of performance and processing enhancements. This material innovation was created using Dow’s unique INSITE™ technology, which enables olefin elastomers to expand into a wide range of potential market applications for converters and manufacturers of flexible goods and products. INFUSE OBCs market applications include flexible molded goods, profile extruded products, hoses and tubes, elastic fibers and films, foams, coated fabrics, adhesives and tapes.
